About mp3PRO

mp3PRO was developed by Coding Technologies and enhances the high-frequency component of the mp3 audio signal. This technology is called "Spectral Band Replication" (SBR) and utilizes only a few Kbps, hence is very efficient.

mp3 is combined with SPR and the product is mp3PRO. This format is composed of two components. The mp3 portion, which contains the low-frequency spectrum and the SPR (PRO) portion, which contains the high-frequency spectrum. This technology produces an audio signal with high bandwidth at low bit rates.

mp3PRO technology can be played on a standard mp3 player, however the high-frequency enhancement is not reproduced as the SBR (PRO) portion of the format is simply ignored.

Listening With mp3PRO

mp3PRO provides near CD quality audio when listening with a mp3PRO compatible player. WDAB stations currently broadcast in mp3PRO format, and we highly recommend the use of a mp3PRO compatible player to listen to our stations. We feel the audio quality with the use of a standard mp3 player is unacceptable.

To take advantage of the mp3PRO format, you must use a player, which is capable of decoding the SBR (PRO) enhancement. Winamp has a free plug-in that works well with their player (click here for link). Another option that we highly recommend is Live365's "Radio365" player which supports mp3PRO (click here for link). This player lives right on your desktop, making it extremely handy and easy to use.

Keep in mind that a standard mp3 player will work, however a mp3PRO compatible player will produce audio that is near CD quality. Note: If you use Windows Media Player, you may experience severe buffering delays.
